Video Format Guide

How to ensure your videos play correctly on TV devices.

Required Format

For videos to play on TV devices, they must meet these requirements:

  • Video codec: H.264 (also called AVC or x264)
  • Audio codec: AAC
  • Container: MP4 or WebM
  • Color: Standard SDR (8-bit color)

Formats That Won't Work

  • HEVC / H.265 - Common in iPhone videos and 4K content
  • Dolby Vision / HDR - Advanced color formats
  • MOV files - Often use incompatible codecs
  • AVI, MKV - Legacy container formats

How to Convert Your Videos

Option 1: Free Online Converters

These websites let you convert videos for free without installing software:

When using these tools, select MP4 as the output format and H.264 as the video codec.

Option 2: HandBrake (Desktop App)

For larger files or batch conversions, we recommend HandBrake - a free, open-source tool:

  1. Download HandBrake from handbrake.fr
  2. Open your video file in HandBrake
  3. Select the "Fast 1080p30" or "HQ 1080p30 Surround" preset
  4. Click "Start Encode"

These presets automatically use H.264 video and AAC audio, which are compatible with all TV devices.

Pro Tip

If you're creating videos specifically for Trikome, export them directly as H.264 MP4 from your video editing software. Most editors like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve support this format.
